During the Ashes series 2023, until now, Australian batsman David Warner has continuously struggled against Stuart Broad and continued this in the third test match also. Warner’s poor form has become a major topic of discussion ahead of the fourth test, which will start on July 19 at Old Trafford Stadium. Broad has dismissed Warner 17 times in the test format and three times in the current series. Warner’s struggles, especially against Broad, have led to much speculation about whether coach Andrew McDonald and skipper Pat Cummins will continue with him at the top of the order because he has been dismissed by Broad in more than one way. Now Former Australian Captain Ricky Ponting has also given his point of view on this matter.

Warner’s dismissal has caused some concern
Ponting said, “I know there has been a lot of talk in the last few days since the end of the Headingley test, and it’s a fact that it is Broad who is dismissing Warner.  He has struggled to get through Broad’s opening spells a few times in this series, which is now something to worry about”. Warner’s first dismissal in this series at Edgbaston was against Broad; after this, he was also dismissed by Ollie Robinson and twice by Josh Tongue. However,Broad’s dismissal of Warner twice in the third test has caused some concern.

Ricky Ponting also talked about the psychological aspects of the English bowler’s dominance over Warner and how it could be used as an advantage by the English team. He said, “In the past, I have played against teams and bowlers where you know they got you over and you can’t get away. If I am Ben Stokes, and even if David Warner gets away in Broad’s first spell, I will bring him back again after a short break”.

Warner should bring back the aggression- Ponting
He further added that when someone has dismissed you 17 times, It becomes a mental battle more than a technical battle. However, the former cricketer still believes that Australia should keep faith in Warner because he has a lot of experience and brings out his best when needed. Even if they make a change, it would be a very brave call to bring in someone who hasn’t been in the line-up. Ponting also advised Warner to bring back the aggression with which he was associated in the past.
