Harry Kane’s dream of winning a maiden Bundesliga title is all but dead after Bayern Munich fell to a shock 2-0 defeat against Dortmund
Bayern knew only a victory against their arch-rivals would do after Bayer Leverkusen extended their lead at the summit to 13 points courtesy of a rousing fightback win against 1899 Hoffenheim earlier in the day.
But the reigning German champions were downed by goals from Karim Adeyemi and Julian Ryerson to leave Xabi Alonso’s side with one hand on the Bundesliga title.
Adeyemi squeezed a close-range strike beyond Sven Ulreich in the 10th minute to stun Bayern, who had flown out of the blocks at the Allianz Arena.
Kane, fit after withdrawing from England duty during the international break, plundered a hat-trick in the reverse fixture. But his luck was well and truly out this time around.
The Three Lions captain spurned a golden chance in the opening minutes, heading over from six yards after rising majestically in the box. And he was unable to meet a deep, searching cross from Joshua Kimmich midway through the first half as Bayern desperately tried to restore parity before the break.
Despite Bayern’s dominance of the ball, Dortmund still posed a threat on the counter and Ulreich had to be at his best to thwart Felix Nmecha early in the second half.
Mats Hummels was then in the right place at the right time to deny Kane a tap-in as the veteran defender – and former Bayern stalwart – rolled back the years.
Kane moved to Munich in a bid to win major honours but the dream of landing a maiden league title in his first year in Germany was ruthlessly killed off by Ryerson late on.
Shortly after Kane headed a gilt-edged chance wide from close-range, Ryerson lashed a low drive beyond Ulreich to end Dortmund’s 10-year wait for a league win in Munich.
There was still time for Kane to find the net to give the hosts hope. But tallying with the striker’s night as a whole, VAR intervened to deny him even that.
And with just seven matches left between now and the end of the campaign, Kane and Bayern’s hopes of Bundesliga glory are effectively over.
